India has embarked on an ambitious journey to become one of the world’s leading shipbuilding nations, targeting a position among the top 10 globally by 2030 and top 5 by 2047. To support this vision, the Government of India has recently approved a comprehensive Shipbuilding Package of ₹69,250 crore (USD 8 billion) aimed at expanding domestic shipbuilding capacity from 0.05 million GT to 0.5 million GT by 2030, and further to 4.5 million GT by 2047.

As part of this initiative, the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SBDS) with a corpus of ₹19,989 crore focuses on establishing mega greenfield shipbuilding clusters across India. Five locations—Kuchhadi (Gujarat), Duggirajapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu), Dighi (Maharashtra) and Kendrapara (Odisha) have already received in-principle approval. Additional brownfield expansion opportunities, including Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), are also being advanced.
